Dr Allan Kalus

FRCS, FRCS(ED), FRACS (MED0001022319)
REGISTERED MEDICAL PRACTITIONER, SPECIALIST PLASTIC SURGEON

With more than 40 years’ experience, Dr Allan Kalus is one of the most respected plastic surgeons in Australia. In 1991, he founded Avenue Plastic Surgery (now Avenue Aesthetic Surgery) after recognising the need for safe and effective surgery in a caring environment. He was one of the pioneers of Day Surgery in Australia over 30 years ago and introduced fat transfer to the breast as an alternative method of breast augmentation in 2013.

Dr Allan Kalus was born in Melbourne, Australia and educated at Melbourne High School. Dr Kalus received his medical degree from the University of Melbourne in 1972, following which he served a residency at the Royal Melbourne Hospital. He then undertook extensive specialist training in aesthetic and reconstructive plastic surgery in both Australia and the UK. He is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS), the Royal College of Surgeons of England (FRCS) and the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh [FRCS(ED)].

Throughout his career, Dr Kalus’ focus has been on the welfare of his patients and the minimisation of the stress and complications of surgery. His ability to question conventional surgical beliefs and to develop innovative solutions to improve patient outcomes has been at the centre of his career.

Dr Kalus was one of the pioneers of Day Surgery in Australia. Over 30 years ago, he established Avenue Day Surgery (now Windsor Private Hospital) as a Day Surgery Centre and developed techniques for performing major surgery such as breast reduction, abdominoplasty and facelift as a Day Case. This was done in close collaboration with his anaesthetists and was considered revolutionary at a time when most patients spent several days in hospital. The advantages of Day Surgery in terms of patient recovery and patient wellbeing with fewer complications are now well recognised.

Dr Kalus’ primary concern has always been to minimise the risk to the surgical patient. In 2013 Dr Kalus introduced fat transfer to the breast as an alternative method of breast augmentation. He has now developed this procedure into a reliable technique which is particularly useful as an aid to reconstructing the breasts in women requiring removal of their old breast implants.

In the field of facial rejuvenation and facelift surgery, Dr Kalus has long advocated a minimally invasive approach to tighten both the skin and muscle and also pioneered the use of fat transfer to rejuvenate the lips and cheeks. His techniques have been designed to avoid complications such as nerve damage while producing a satisfactory aesthetic result.

Dr Kalus has recently retired from clinical practice. He remains an active presence in our clinic with his primary role training and mentoring the next generation of surgeons.

Dr Kalus is married with 3 daughters and 2 young grandsons. His wife, Susan, was born in London and studied History at Bedford College, University of London. Their eldest daughter, Sarah, is a Consultant Radiologist at The Royal Melbourne Hospital. She is married to Dr Iwan Bennett who is a Consultant Neurosurgeon at The Alfred Hospital in Melbourne. Their middle daughter, Michelle (also recently married), has a Masters of Teaching and is a primary school teacher. Together with her best friend from school, Ali Berg, she started Books On The Rail in Melbourne and this led to their first novel being published – ‘The Book Ninja.’ This has proved to be an international bestseller. It has been translated into several languages and the film rights have recently been sold. Their second book ‘While You Were Reading’ has recently been published. Their youngest daughter, Alicia, is a Senior Economist at the Department of Treasury and Finance, Victoria.

Apart from Surgery, Dr Kalus has pursued many interests. He is an accomplished jazz pianist whose teacher and mentor was the late Dr Allan Zavod. He has trained as a pilot and has held a multi-engine instrument rating with over 1000 hours flight time. He enjoys swimming, walking and tennis and is an avid reader currently reading books on early Australian maritime explorers and military history.
