What you need to know about Hybrid Breast Augmentation

A hybrid (or composite) breast augmentation refers to a breast enlargement procedure using both implants and your own fat. This is an excellent option for women who want a substantial increase in breast volume but who do not have sufficient fat to achieve the result by fat transfer alone.

The hybrid breast augmentation is especially suitable for women who have asymmetry, who are thin, have a bony chest, have a chest wall deformity such as an indented or prominent sternum and for women who want the more natural look that fat transfer provides but desire more volume than can be achieved by fat alone.

The main advantage of adding fat to a breast implant in a breast augmentation procedure is that the fat can be placed strategically in the cleavage and around the implant to ‘soften the edges’ and give a more natural look.

Another advantage is that a smaller implant can be used, which can lessen risks. Though our surgeons believe that one of the safer ways to have a breast augmentation procedure is to rely completely on your own fat with an autologous fat transfer, there are circumstances where a patient would prefer a hybrid breast augmentation. The result will, of course, depend on the amount of fat that is available. No two breast augmentation procedures are the same. An good outcome depends on a careful and comprehensive evaluation of your personal needs followed by skilful surgery.

OUR APPROACH TO HYBRID BREAST AUGMENTATION

If a larger size increase is required then our surgeons will achieve this by using an implant placed behind the muscle with fat added to enhance the cleavage and to provide additional cover below and to the side of the implant. This provides a softer look and can further reduce the risk of any palpable rippling in situations where the skin is very thin.

Recovery typically involves wearing a postoperative bra for 3 months, a ‘bra band’ over the top of the breasts for 6 weeks and a compression garment over any areas where fat was harvested for fat grafting for 6 weeks.

We recommend no heavy lifting or strenuous exercise for approximately 6 weeks following surgery. Most of our patients return to relatively normal activity and sedentary work after 1 week.

All surgery carries risks which are important to understand so that you make a well-informed decision. Complications associated with hybrid breast augmentation include bleeding, infection, capsular contracture (thickening of the scar tissue around the implant), alterations in nipple sensation, malposition of the implants, implant rupture, asymmetry, poor fat survival, fat necrosis/lumpiness, poor scarring, deep vein thrombosis (blood clots in the legs) and anesthetic complications. Risks associated with liposuction must also be considered.

This listing is not all-inclusive and patients may be at risk for additional complications depending on their past medical and surgical history. A thorough discussion will occur during consultation with your surgeon including ways to mitigate risks prior to surgery and steps taken to treat complications should they occur.
