Yes, there are basically 2 different types of tummy tuck surgery.  The most commonly performed is the radical abdominoplasty where all the skin and fat between the umbilicus (belly button) and the pubic crease are removed.  The skin from the upper abdomen is then stretched across all the way to the pubic hair line to give you a tight tummy.  The abdominal muscles are tightened and a new opening is made for the belly button through the stretched skin.  This procedure results in an improved waist line as well as a tight tummy.  The scar is long but low and in the bikini line.

The second type of tummy tuck is the “subumbilical abdominoplasty”.  This is performed where there is only a small amount of loose skin and fat below the belly button.  In this procedure approximately half the skin and fat from the belly button to the pubic crease is removed and the skin stretched down to produce a tighter tummy.  The upper abdomen is not treated with this operation.  The muscles can still be stitched together but the belly button remains the same.

Your surgeon will be able to advise you which abdominoplasty is best for you.  For a radical abdominoplasty to be performed you must have sufficient loose skin above the belly button.
