Young Women Undergo Breast Reduction For Sports’ Improvement

A recent report in the USA described a trend amongst young athletic women to undergo breast reduction surgery in order to improve their performance.

Apparently, breast reduction has become a popular way for girls to maintain a competitive edge.

It is common for women seeking breast reduction surgery to describe the way in which their heavy bust makes it awkward for them to run and jump. Many women prefer to wear two bras in order to stabilise their bust and reduce the discomfort.

International tennis player, Simona Halep, aged 21 years, made headlines after she disclosed that she had had a breast reduction three years ago, in part to help improve her tennis game.

Breast reduction surgery is one of the most satisfying surgeries performed by plastic surgeons as it relieves physical discomfort as well as having social and psychological advantages.

In the USA last year, more than 100,000 women underwent breast reduction surgery.

It should be noted, however, that like any other surgery, the decision to have a breast reduction, should not be taken lightly! ‘To gain a competitive edge’ is, in itself, no reason to undergo an operation (after all, performance enhancing drugs are banned!)The impact of physical symptoms on quality of life is quite another matter and this would certainly justify surgery. Many women are able to run and jump for the first time in many years after having breast reduction surgery.

One risk is that a young person could request (or be encouraged to request) a significant size reduction, which she may later regret. Indeed, she may be persuaded to have a reduction when, ordinarily, the size of her breasts could be pleasing to her.
