Breast Implant Ban

Today the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) has recommended the cancellation of the license for Allergan’s Macro Textured Breast Implants.

This is because of the association between these implants (commonly known as the BIOCELL implant) and a condition known as Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (ALCL) which is a cancer which forms in the capsule surrounding the breast implants.

Up to April 2019, the TGA had received 76 reports of ALCL associated with breast implants in Australian women.

The risk of developing this condition has now been re estimated at 1:1000. It is estimated that up to 100,000 Australian women have this type of implant.

There is currently no recommendation for women without symptoms to have their textured breast implants removed or replaced but clearly, if you are anxious about your situation, you should consult with your surgeon.

At Avenue Aesthetic Surgery we have never used Macro Textured Breast Implants. We have always placed patients’ safety and welfare first.  For this reason we have always advocated non textured (smooth-walled) implants preferably filled with saline rather than with silicone.  The reason is that when implants are placed behind the muscle it is usually impossible to tell the difference between the various styles of implants. Although there has been a great deal of marketing hype regarding the alleged benefits of implants filled with various types of silicone and of implants with a tear-drop shape, the fact is that even plastic surgeons are unable to tell the difference!

Therefore, for women who require an implant based breast augmentation then the safest and best choice by far is to use a smooth-walled saline implant placed behind the muscle. For women who would prefer an all-natural augmentation then breast augmentation using your own fat is now a valuable and proven technique.
