Browlift – Minimally invasive procedures

The eyes have long been recognized as the most important feature for facial expression.  It is not surprising, therefore, that plastic surgeons have been developing techniques to improve the appearance of the eyes and the surrounding features – especially  the brow.  As we age, it is common for the eyebrow to descend and for excess skin to form in the upper eyelid.

Usually the best way to deal with this situation is to remove the excess skin from the upper eyelid. This procedure is called an upper blepharoplasty.  Sometimes it is necessary to elevate the eyebrow – a browlift procedure.

A traditional browlift was quite a major operation and involved an incision right across the top of the scalp so that the forehead (including the eyebrows) could be lifted.  Less invasive techniques have been developed such as the temporal browlift which seeks to lift just the side of the brow. Other even less invasive procedures can be performed such as the injection of your own fat or filler just below the eyebrow to produce an apparent lift. Botox injections can also be used to alter the muscle dynamics and therefore elevate the eyebrow.

It is interesting that recently surgeons have come to realize that aggressive browlifting procedures do not produce a natural look.  In fact, minimal changes to brow shape and position can result in a big aesthetic improvement.

At a recent presentation of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery annual meeting in New York, a group of physicians discussed their success with minimally invasive eyebrow shaping techniques.

The conclusion was that for an optimal outcome the approach must be personalised for the individual patient and often required a combination of surgical and non surgical techniques.

At Avenue Aesthetic Surgery in Melbourne we have been performing brow rejuvenation surgery for many years.  A full evaluation of the eyelid and brow aesthetics is done and then the various options regarding surgical and non surgical rejuvenation techniques are discussed.
